Where?
We had the pleasure of cruising onboard the Caribbean Princess. One of the port of calls was San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ship docked right downtown, within easy walking distance to Old San Juan.
What to Do?
We decided to take a self-guided walking tour. There’s lots to see:
Paseo de La Princesa- this is a shady walkway that runs along the old city walls. Sometimes, there are vendors set up along the way. The Raices Fountain is at the western end.
As you walk, notice the blue cobblestone streets. They are actually ship ballast from English sailing vessels.
We stopped by the Cafe Del Nino for a coffee and pastry
Puerta de San Juan - the last remaining city gate; so when you walk through it, you are inside the old city.
Catedral de San Juan Bautista - The Spanish brought Catholicism with them to the New World. This cathedral is the 2nd oldest in the Americas. It is very beautiful, and worth the visit.
Castillo San Cristobal - this well-preserved fort has withstood the test of time. Now operated by the National Park Setvice, this huge fort occupies 27 acres. Plan on spending a few hours there, if you want to see it all.
There are lots of stores and souvenir shops to visit on your walk.
Try dining at one of the restaurants along the way, and experience local food and drinks like mofongo, tostones, a Pina Colada, or some tasty Puerto Rican rum!
If You Go:
We visited during the summer, and it was extremely hot. Make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen. Take a wide-brimmed hat for shade, and sunglasses. And, of course, stay hydrated.
The area seemed very safe. There are police everywhere directing traffic and pedestrians and keeping a watch over things. As in all places, be aware of your surroundings. I was impressed by how clean it was there.
